February - 2007

Today is the last day of my Chinese New Year holiday, and like I promised I added some more pictures to my space!  The pictures are from way back in August when I moved back to Beijing of my new apartment and the area around my apartment.  I spent this past week hanging out with friends here in Beijing.  Chinese New Years again amazed me this year!  It is totally amazing to me how many fireworks and firecrackers go off!!! and not just at night!!!  Seeing fireworks going off in the middle of the day is crazy and somewhat a waste.  On New Years Eve I went with some friends for dinner at the Capital Club, which is on the 50th floor of the Capital Mansion.  What a way to view fireworks!!!  WOW  I had a panoramic view of the city... figuring out where to look was the biggest problem the whole sky was lit up.  It was quite amazing seeing fireworks from above.  On New Years Day I went to the Lama Temple and a Temple fair experiencing yet another aspect of Chinese Culture!!!  There were people everywhere trying to get to get to the various Buddas to light insence for family members and to make wishes.  The rest of the week was spent shopping and going out at night.  Much fun was had during my week off!!!  I even found this great bar called Alpha that plays all 80's music every Friday night, this is a place I will be going back to!!!
During this week I also looked after a friends dog, Chloe.  It was great being a dog owner again for a week.  I went for lots of long walks around my neighbourhood in between all the fireworks and firecrackers.....as Chloe was petrified of the noise!!!  Now I am doing a major clean up....washing all my couch covers and bedding, because of all the hair and drool.  I had forgotten what it was like to have a dog.  Thankfully I have my Ayi (cleaning lady) coming in twice this week.
Well till next time, be well.

My Chinese New Year's Goal!!

Hi Everyone,

Just thought I would let you all know that things here in China are really good. I have settled into the city quite easily and am enjoying being closer to all the amenities. However the pollution is quite scary....some one told me recently that living in Beijing is like smoking 17 packs of cigarettes a day!!! I hope he was exaggerating but it is pretty bad! I do absolutely love my apartment though (with or without the pollution!) it is perfect for me! I will post some pictures soon of my apartment and the surrounding area, during the Chinese New Year Holiday.

I am thoroughly enjoying work. I have the best children in my class. I have 17 children enrolled in my class, I actually should be saying our class - - - I have the most amazingly sweet Chinese co-teacher, Tina! She is absolutely lovely. So our class has 17 students! This past Thursday we had our second round of parent teacher interviews and it went extremely well. All the parents are super pleased with the program and encouraged by the development of their children! The majority of the parents commented that there children love coming to school. I will post some pictures of the children as well for you to all see in the next while.

OK ...so my goal for the Chinese's New Year's is to update my web page! I will add photos from the first week I arrive back in Beijing to photos I have taken recently. I will also update my blog accordingly....then I will send an email to my whole contact list to let everyone know that it has been updated. I had lots of fun doing my blog and photo album last year but just got out of the routine towards the end. Hopefully I will be able to keep up with it for the rest of the school term.

Overall I am having a great time here. Even though some days it seems like the same old same old (much like it would be at home) There are many other days that I wake up and say I can't beleive I am in China!!! You would be amazed at the things I see on a daily basis and the things that don't effect me at all anymore!!! During the Chinese New Year I will try to put some of these strange events that happen here into words but also capture some photos of crazy things as well!!!

Till next time, for those of you who never gave up looking for an update thanks for being patient!!! for those of you who are looking at my site for the very first time...thanks for coming out! and well for those of you who totally gave up....well you are not reading it anyways!!!

Take care - - more to come soon, including some photos.

sin nyen kwai ler - Happy Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year's started out pretty uneventful for me.  All of my Chinese friends had gone home to their home towns to celebrate with their families.  So besides from going to Ikea, which was a huge mistake...because all of Beijing seemed to be in the store!!! it was spent re-orginizing my room...with my new Ikea storage bins!!!

This is a huge festival for the Chinese people...they light off firecrackers all week leading up to and then at 12:00 midnight on New Year's Eve they light off fireworks... At least this was my understanding of the tradition.  Well all I can say is that the weeks leading up to New Year's were filled with fire crackers and fireworks every day all day long...They light then to ward off evil spirits... So during my room organizing adventure I would have to stop and watch the fire works which where amazing...then at 10:00 p.m. our neighbor invited us over to his place for some New Year's cheer!!!!  This was only the 2nd time I had met Leo...but when he found out I was organizing my room he would not take no for an answer...and really was I even considering saying no!!!  organizing my room or partying??????? it really was a no-brainer...

Leo had some work friends over and his brother and parents and some kids...so it was a full house very busy and lots of bantering amongst us all.  I really enjoyed myself...celebrating.  At midnight we headed outside and watched the fireworks display and listened to the fire crackers....it was totally out of control!!!!! what a sight to see...no matter where you looked the sky was lit up...it was so loud all of the car alarms where going off...people where in the middle of the street lighting off the fireworks...everyone was having a great time....After all of Leo's fireworks were gone we headed back to his place for some more New Year's cheer...I finally headed across the hall at 3:00 a.m. Amazingly enough I still heard fireworks at 4:40 a.m. and the fire crackers started again at 8 in the morning....absolutley amazing....I am completly sure that there are no more evil spirits in the whole of China....What a night!!!

Happy Chinese New Year's everyone!!!  Sin nyen kwai ler ----- or Kung Hei Fat Choi....enjoy the photos

trip to harbin

On Friday after work we headed to the train staion to meet up with the Cycle China tour group. We had signed up for a weekend excursion to Harbin. We took the overnight train as Harbin is located in the north of China in the Province of Heilongjiang which boarders Russia. Harbin has the nickname as Little Moscow because of its Russian architecture located throughout the city.

We arrived in Harbin on Saturday morning at around 7 a.m., the temperature when we arrived was a balmy....-29 with a windchill of -----COLD!!! Thankfully I am from Canada....but even the cold air took my breath away when I first got off the train....man it was cold and it stayed cold.....BRRRRRR.

We headed for the hotel for some breakfast before we got started for the day. The day started with a trip to the Church of Saint Sophia, famous for it's Russin architectural influence. After a few photo opts and a tour inside of the Church we headed to our next stop of the trip, the frozen Songhua River. At the river there were many winter activities we could participate in. A few of the people in our tour group took a horse and buggy ride most of us just looked around and took picutres. I wanted to go on snowmobile but it was soooo cold and I was not dressed warm enough for it.....and well it was being driven by a tiger???? What's up with that? Our next stop was the Japanese Germ Warfare Experimental Base - Division 731. It was a museum set up to show the tourture the Chinese people endured at the hand of the Japanese during the second world war. Very sobering to learn about this part of history. Later in the afternoon we headed to the Ice Lantern Festival. We walked through the park taking pictures of the amazing ice buildings and sculpture. Then as we walked around the sun began to set and the ice sculptures and buildings began to be lit....What a beautiful sight...unfortunately the pictures don't do it justice....

The next day we enjoyed a stroll through the Snow Sculpture Festival at the Sun Island Park. The day was beautiful, although it was still FREEZING!!! the sun was shining and it was a nice crisp morning for a walk though the park..the snow sculptures were amazing....so much detail and some of them sooooo big!!!!! After the stroll through the park we headed to the Siberian Tiger Park for a safari. The park has over 300 free roaming tigers and cubs and other species such as a liger(lion and tiger hybird), white tigers and pumas. Unfortunately I did not manage to get a good picture of a liger or a white tiger but I did get many great shots of the tigers. They sure are a beautiful creature. After our safari we headed to the pedestrian shopping street, Zhongyang Avenue to do some shopping, and to enjoy the Russian architecture. Then back to the train station to board the train for our overnight trip home.

A great weekend away in the north of China despite the cold weather...Enjoy the pictures, I enjoyed taking them...well most of them!!!! a few of them are from another tour member, Jacob V from the Netherlands...thanks Jacob).

Happy New Year's

Happy New Year's.    WOW  2006!!!  I hope you all had a great new year's eve...I know it is a bit late in coming but our internet has been quite touchy since the new year....we think we finally have it figured out.

I spent New Year's Eve this year at the Kai Bar, a local Tea House, and then at Tiananmen Square to watch the flag raising!  It was a great night!!!  Although I must admit that I am not as young as I used to be because pulling an all nighter...well to say the least took more out of me than I care to admit (mind you my oh so younger roomies did not fair much better either...one of them even went home earlier!!! and woke up later than me!!!!!)....New Year's day was spent around my apartment recouperating from a lack of sleep.

I feel I need to start planning for next year's New Years Eve event...last year Time Square-New York ....this year Tiananmen Square-Beijing....what to do, what to do????

I am not sure how I managed not getting any pictures of Tiananmen Square...but really I was there...all I can say is the crowd was huge...Till next time enjoy the pictures.

Christmas in Beijing

I had this great idea back in November that I would take pictures of all things Christmas in Beijing.  Well to my surprise Christmas decorations started popping up in Beijing at the end of November.  So instead of taking pictures of all things Christmas in Beijing I took pictures of some things Christmas in Beijing.

The month of December flew by and before I knew it was Christmas Eve.  So first thing in the morning I headed out to do some last min. shopping (somethings never change no matter what Continent I am on  ), then I met my roommates and we headed to the Hard Rock Cafe to meet the other foriegn teachers from the other kindergarten.  We all enjoyed a nice western style lunch, albeit not that Christmasy but yummy none the less.  Then we headed to Ronda's apartment for some christmas goodies and our gift exchange.  Home early so I made myself a hot chocolate with Bailey's (yes I managed to find Bailey's here in Beijing) and I settled down for a long winter's nap - not - I actually watched the dvd the Polar Express, one of my favourite children's books and a great movie.  After that I re-read a Christmas devotional sent to me via e-mail, that reminded me that no matter where you are or who you are with or without on Christmas, the real meaning of Christmas never changes....(thanks it meant a lot) A really great thought to go to bed Christmas Eve with.

In the morning on Christmas Day I got up early to get ready for Church and to wait for my family to come on-line.  This was one of the best presents I recived this Christmas...being able to see all of my family..granted not in person but surely the next best way.  The only ones missing where Cheryl, Ian and Aiden - they just bought a house in Arizona and could not make the trip home either.  It was great to chat to all of them.  The only disappointing thing was that they could hear me but I could not hear them, which meant when my neice Erika started playing her violin and they started singing Christmas carols I could not hear them.  But I figured I would get to sing lots of Christmas Carols at church.  Which of course was the case, however I forgot that the service started at 10 a.m. instead of 11 a.m. so when I arrived at 10:30 the caroling was done....just my luck....actually it made me smile....not sure why but it did.  Then I met my friend and co-teacher Tina for lunch.  We went out for Mexican.  I know prbabley the least Christmasy thing to do eat Mexican on Christmas day...who knew this time last year that I would be eating Mexican for Christmas.....It is amazing how things change in such a short time.  Back home late afternoon to have some Christmas Cheer with my roommates and exchange our gifts.

Christmas was actually okay.....but I must admit that all of your packages, cards (whether snail mail or e-cards), Christmas wishes in e-mails and Christmasy forwards have helped me get through this Christmas Season here in Beijing.....SO Thank you Thank you Thank you from the bottom of my .  I LOVE and MISS you ALL!!!

I hope and pray that you all have had a wonderful Christmas and may you all enjoy your New Years Eve and may you all have a fantastic 2006!!!!!

Till next year.....enjoy the pictures.

trip to the Zoo

Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow... in Ontario, not in Beijing, thank you very much.   Hope you are all enjoying the snow, I sure don't miss it.  We have had absolutely beautiful weather here.  Today we had bright blue skies for most of the day and the temperature reached 12 degrees or more.  It sure was a  beautiful day for a trip to the Zoo!

We're going to the zoo, zoo, zoo
How about you, you, you
You can come too, too, too
We're going to the zoo, zoo, zoo

See all the monkeys  they're a scritch, scritch, scratchin'.

See all the panda bear's they're just a lay, lay, layin'.

See all the turtle's they're just a crawl, crawl, crawlin'.

See all the snakes they're a slither, slither, slitherin'.

See all the lizards they're a creep, creep, creepin'.

See all the giraffes they're a walk, walk, walkin'.

See all the birds they're a fly, fly, flyin'.

We've been to the zoo, zoo, zoo
We've been to the zoo, zoo, zoo
So have you, you, you
You came too, too, too

We've been to the ZOO!!

Well, despite the fact it was a beautiful day for a trip to the zoo, I was a bit disappointed in the zoo.  The panda bears were so sad.  Just laying around not doing anything.  The other animals actually looked like they were treated ok (except for the gorrilla) but most of them were kept behind glass.  Very hard to take pictures.  I had read a few articles about the zoo in which they said if you are an animal lover you will not enjoy the zoo.  Nonetheless it was a planned outing from the kindergarten and a few of our co-workers joined us, so we went anyway.  The other thing that the articles mentioned was with the olympics coming to Beijing they are making a bigger effort to give the zoo a facelift and give the animals a more natural living environment.  Horray for the Olympics!!

I did manage to get a few good pictures to post, despite the conditions.  I hope you enjoy them.

Till next time take care.
