February - 2007

Today is the last day of my Chinese New Year holiday, and like I promised I added some more pictures to my space!  The pictures are from way back in August when I moved back to Beijing of my new apartment and the area around my apartment.  I spent this past week hanging out with friends here in Beijing.  Chinese New Years again amazed me this year!  It is totally amazing to me how many fireworks and firecrackers go off!!! and not just at night!!!  Seeing fireworks going off in the middle of the day is crazy and somewhat a waste.  On New Years Eve I went with some friends for dinner at the Capital Club, which is on the 50th floor of the Capital Mansion.  What a way to view fireworks!!!  WOW  I had a panoramic view of the city... figuring out where to look was the biggest problem the whole sky was lit up.  It was quite amazing seeing fireworks from above.  On New Years Day I went to the Lama Temple and a Temple fair experiencing yet another aspect of Chinese Culture!!!  There were people everywhere trying to get to get to the various Buddas to light insence for family members and to make wishes.  The rest of the week was spent shopping and going out at night.  Much fun was had during my week off!!!  I even found this great bar called Alpha that plays all 80's music every Friday night, this is a place I will be going back to!!!
During this week I also looked after a friends dog, Chloe.  It was great being a dog owner again for a week.  I went for lots of long walks around my neighbourhood in between all the fireworks and firecrackers.....as Chloe was petrified of the noise!!!  Now I am doing a major clean up....washing all my couch covers and bedding, because of all the hair and drool.  I had forgotten what it was like to have a dog.  Thankfully I have my Ayi (cleaning lady) coming in twice this week.
Well till next time, be well.

My Chinese New Year's Goal!!

Hi Everyone,

Just thought I would let you all know that things here in China are really good. I have settled into the city quite easily and am enjoying being closer to all the amenities. However the pollution is quite scary....some one told me recently that living in Beijing is like smoking 17 packs of cigarettes a day!!! I hope he was exaggerating but it is pretty bad! I do absolutely love my apartment though (with or without the pollution!) it is perfect for me! I will post some pictures soon of my apartment and the surrounding area, during the Chinese New Year Holiday.

I am thoroughly enjoying work. I have the best children in my class. I have 17 children enrolled in my class, I actually should be saying our class - - - I have the most amazingly sweet Chinese co-teacher, Tina! She is absolutely lovely. So our class has 17 students! This past Thursday we had our second round of parent teacher interviews and it went extremely well. All the parents are super pleased with the program and encouraged by the development of their children! The majority of the parents commented that there children love coming to school. I will post some pictures of the children as well for you to all see in the next while.

OK ...so my goal for the Chinese's New Year's is to update my web page! I will add photos from the first week I arrive back in Beijing to photos I have taken recently. I will also update my blog accordingly....then I will send an email to my whole contact list to let everyone know that it has been updated. I had lots of fun doing my blog and photo album last year but just got out of the routine towards the end. Hopefully I will be able to keep up with it for the rest of the school term.

Overall I am having a great time here. Even though some days it seems like the same old same old (much like it would be at home) There are many other days that I wake up and say I can't beleive I am in China!!! You would be amazed at the things I see on a daily basis and the things that don't effect me at all anymore!!! During the Chinese New Year I will try to put some of these strange events that happen here into words but also capture some photos of crazy things as well!!!

Till next time, for those of you who never gave up looking for an update thanks for being patient!!! for those of you who are looking at my site for the very first time...thanks for coming out! and well for those of you who totally gave up....well you are not reading it anyways!!!

Take care - - more to come soon, including some photos.

sin nyen kwai ler - Happy Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year's started out pretty uneventful for me.  All of my Chinese friends had gone home to their home towns to celebrate with their families.  So besides from going to Ikea, which was a huge mistake...because all of Beijing seemed to be in the store!!! it was spent re-orginizing my room...with my new Ikea storage bins!!!

This is a huge festival for the Chinese people...they light off firecrackers all week leading up to and then at 12:00 midnight on New Year's Eve they light off fireworks... At least this was my understanding of the tradition.  Well all I can say is that the weeks leading up to New Year's were filled with fire crackers and fireworks every day all day long...They light then to ward off evil spirits... So during my room organizing adventure I would have to stop and watch the fire works which where amazing...then at 10:00 p.m. our neighbor invited us over to his place for some New Year's cheer!!!!  This was only the 2nd time I had met Leo...but when he found out I was organizing my room he would not take no for an answer...and really was I even considering saying no!!!  organizing my room or partying??????? it really was a no-brainer...

Leo had some work friends over and his brother and parents and some kids...so it was a full house very busy and lots of bantering amongst us all.  I really enjoyed myself...celebrating.  At midnight we headed outside and watched the fireworks display and listened to the fire crackers....it was totally out of control!!!!! what a sight to see...no matter where you looked the sky was lit up...it was so loud all of the car alarms where going off...people where in the middle of the street lighting off the fireworks...everyone was having a great time....After all of Leo's fireworks were gone we headed back to his place for some more New Year's cheer...I finally headed across the hall at 3:00 a.m. Amazingly enough I still heard fireworks at 4:40 a.m. and the fire crackers started again at 8 in the morning....absolutley amazing....I am completly sure that there are no more evil spirits in the whole of China....What a night!!!

Happy Chinese New Year's everyone!!!  Sin nyen kwai ler ----- or Kung Hei Fat Choi....enjoy the photos

trip to harbin

On Friday after work we headed to the train staion to meet up with the Cycle China tour group. We had signed up for a weekend excursion to Harbin. We took the overnight train as Harbin is located in the north of China in the Province of Heilongjiang which boarders Russia. Harbin has the nickname as Little Moscow because of its Russian architecture located throughout the city.

We arrived in Harbin on Saturday morning at around 7 a.m., the temperature when we arrived was a balmy....-29 with a windchill of -----COLD!!! Thankfully I am from Canada....but even the cold air took my breath away when I first got off the train....man it was cold and it stayed cold.....BRRRRRR.

We headed for the hotel for some breakfast before we got started for the day. The day started with a trip to the Church of Saint Sophia, famous for it's Russin architectural influence. After a few photo opts and a tour inside of the Church we headed to our next stop of the trip, the frozen Songhua River. At the river there were many winter activities we could participate in. A few of the people in our tour group took a horse and buggy ride most of us just looked around and took picutres. I wanted to go on snowmobile but it was soooo cold and I was not dressed warm enough for it.....and well it was being driven by a tiger???? What's up with that? Our next stop was the Japanese Germ Warfare Experimental Base - Division 731. It was a museum set up to show the tourture the Chinese people endured at the hand of the Japanese during the second world war. Very sobering to learn about this part of history. Later in the afternoon we headed to the Ice Lantern Festival. We walked through the park taking pictures of the amazing ice buildings and sculpture. Then as we walked around the sun began to set and the ice sculptures and buildings began to be lit....What a beautiful sight...unfortunately the pictures don't do it justice....

The next day we enjoyed a stroll through the Snow Sculpture Festival at the Sun Island Park. The day was beautiful, although it was still FREEZING!!! the sun was shining and it was a nice crisp morning for a walk though the park..the snow sculptures were amazing....so much detail and some of them sooooo big!!!!! After the stroll through the park we headed to the Siberian Tiger Park for a safari. The park has over 300 free roaming tigers and cubs and other species such as a liger(lion and tiger hybird), white tigers and pumas. Unfortunately I did not manage to get a good picture of a liger or a white tiger but I did get many great shots of the tigers. They sure are a beautiful creature. After our safari we headed to the pedestrian shopping street, Zhongyang Avenue to do some shopping, and to enjoy the Russian architecture. Then back to the train station to board the train for our overnight trip home.

A great weekend away in the north of China despite the cold weather...Enjoy the pictures, I enjoyed taking them...well most of them!!!! a few of them are from another tour member, Jacob V from the Netherlands...thanks Jacob).

Happy New Year's

Happy New Year's.    WOW  2006!!!  I hope you all had a great new year's eve...I know it is a bit late in coming but our internet has been quite touchy since the new year....we think we finally have it figured out.

I spent New Year's Eve this year at the Kai Bar, a local Tea House, and then at Tiananmen Square to watch the flag raising!  It was a great night!!!  Although I must admit that I am not as young as I used to be because pulling an all nighter...well to say the least took more out of me than I care to admit (mind you my oh so younger roomies did not fair much better either...one of them even went home earlier!!! and woke up later than me!!!!!)....New Year's day was spent around my apartment recouperating from a lack of sleep.

I feel I need to start planning for next year's New Years Eve event...last year Time Square-New York ....this year Tiananmen Square-Beijing....what to do, what to do????

I am not sure how I managed not getting any pictures of Tiananmen Square...but really I was there...all I can say is the crowd was huge...Till next time enjoy the pictures.

Christmas in Beijing

I had this great idea back in November that I would take pictures of all things Christmas in Beijing.  Well to my surprise Christmas decorations started popping up in Beijing at the end of November.  So instead of taking pictures of all things Christmas in Beijing I took pictures of some things Christmas in Beijing.

The month of December flew by and before I knew it was Christmas Eve.  So first thing in the morning I headed out to do some last min. shopping (somethings never change no matter what Continent I am on  ), then I met my roommates and we headed to the Hard Rock Cafe to meet the other foriegn teachers from the other kindergarten.  We all enjoyed a nice western style lunch, albeit not that Christmasy but yummy none the less.  Then we headed to Ronda's apartment for some christmas goodies and our gift exchange.  Home early so I made myself a hot chocolate with Bailey's (yes I managed to find Bailey's here in Beijing) and I settled down for a long winter's nap - not - I actually watched the dvd the Polar Express, one of my favourite children's books and a great movie.  After that I re-read a Christmas devotional sent to me via e-mail, that reminded me that no matter where you are or who you are with or without on Christmas, the real meaning of Christmas never changes....(thanks it meant a lot) A really great thought to go to bed Christmas Eve with.

In the morning on Christmas Day I got up early to get ready for Church and to wait for my family to come on-line.  This was one of the best presents I recived this Christmas...being able to see all of my family..granted not in person but surely the next best way.  The only ones missing where Cheryl, Ian and Aiden - they just bought a house in Arizona and could not make the trip home either.  It was great to chat to all of them.  The only disappointing thing was that they could hear me but I could not hear them, which meant when my neice Erika started playing her violin and they started singing Christmas carols I could not hear them.  But I figured I would get to sing lots of Christmas Carols at church.  Which of course was the case, however I forgot that the service started at 10 a.m. instead of 11 a.m. so when I arrived at 10:30 the caroling was done....just my luck....actually it made me smile....not sure why but it did.  Then I met my friend and co-teacher Tina for lunch.  We went out for Mexican.  I know prbabley the least Christmasy thing to do eat Mexican on Christmas day...who knew this time last year that I would be eating Mexican for Christmas.....It is amazing how things change in such a short time.  Back home late afternoon to have some Christmas Cheer with my roommates and exchange our gifts.

Christmas was actually okay.....but I must admit that all of your packages, cards (whether snail mail or e-cards), Christmas wishes in e-mails and Christmasy forwards have helped me get through this Christmas Season here in Beijing.....SO Thank you Thank you Thank you from the bottom of my .  I LOVE and MISS you ALL!!!

I hope and pray that you all have had a wonderful Christmas and may you all enjoy your New Years Eve and may you all have a fantastic 2006!!!!!

Till next year.....enjoy the pictures.

trip to the Zoo

Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow... in Ontario, not in Beijing, thank you very much.   Hope you are all enjoying the snow, I sure don't miss it.  We have had absolutely beautiful weather here.  Today we had bright blue skies for most of the day and the temperature reached 12 degrees or more.  It sure was a  beautiful day for a trip to the Zoo!

We're going to the zoo, zoo, zoo
How about you, you, you
You can come too, too, too
We're going to the zoo, zoo, zoo

See all the monkeys  they're a scritch, scritch, scratchin'.

See all the panda bear's they're just a lay, lay, layin'.

See all the turtle's they're just a crawl, crawl, crawlin'.

See all the snakes they're a slither, slither, slitherin'.

See all the lizards they're a creep, creep, creepin'.

See all the giraffes they're a walk, walk, walkin'.

See all the birds they're a fly, fly, flyin'.

We've been to the zoo, zoo, zoo
We've been to the zoo, zoo, zoo
So have you, you, you
You came too, too, too

We've been to the ZOO!!

Well, despite the fact it was a beautiful day for a trip to the zoo, I was a bit disappointed in the zoo.  The panda bears were so sad.  Just laying around not doing anything.  The other animals actually looked like they were treated ok (except for the gorrilla) but most of them were kept behind glass.  Very hard to take pictures.  I had read a few articles about the zoo in which they said if you are an animal lover you will not enjoy the zoo.  Nonetheless it was a planned outing from the kindergarten and a few of our co-workers joined us, so we went anyway.  The other thing that the articles mentioned was with the olympics coming to Beijing they are making a bigger effort to give the zoo a facelift and give the animals a more natural living environment.  Horray for the Olympics!!

I did manage to get a few good pictures to post, despite the conditions.  I hope you enjoy them.

Till next time take care.

The Great Wall @ Simatia

It has been a few weeks since my last update.  Ok Ok it has been more than a few weeks since my last update!!What can I say - well nothing - I really have no excuse!

Here is goes.  The past month has been overall really good.  I have gotten into a bit of a rountine at work, I actually now remember which mornings or afternoons I have office time and which mornings or afternoons I have to be in the classroom.  Although I am still floundering a bit on the workshops I am working on, a lack of resources being the biggest challenge.  On the weekends I have also fallen into a good routine which usually includes sleeping in till about 8:30-9:00 on Saturday, then heading out for a bit of shopping, groceries and such, with a bit of Christmas shopping thrown in there to.  This past weekend I  went into the city and shopped on the famous shopping street Wangfujing, and then I was going  to go on to Silk Street, it is actually a big building not a full street at all, I guess years ago it was a whole street but now it is a big 5 story building with many different vender booths. It has actually been in the news recently I guess that a number of famous designers like Gucci and Loui Voutan (I am sure the spelliing of that is wrong!!! not much for name brands) and  others are sueing it for 2.5 billion yuan for selling knock offs!!!  Then on Sunday I head to church and usually spend the day in town, having lunch with other church members and then doing a bit of shopping.  There are a few stores near my church that sell some imported products so I usually pick up a few things that I can't get at my local stores.  I try to get home early evening, then I spend sometime on-line with friends or doing a bit of work for school then head to bed,  for a good nights sleep before I start another week.

Earlier this month we went on a day trip to another part of the Great Wall,  Simatia.  I had been hoping for some blue skies for the trip, but as luck would have it I woke up to very gray overcast skies which looked like they could open up and pour at any moment. Of course living in Beijing you see many days like this and there have actually only had 3 days of rain since I arrived in Beijing the end of August.  So I was still very hopeful of the skies clearing before we reached the Great Wall.  It was about a 3 hour drive and as we drove the sky seemed to be clearing!!!  The skies continued to change throughout the day but i did manage to get some nice pictures with blue skies.  The climb was again very difficult!!!  I still have no idea how these people built this mass structure!!!!!! The steps are so steep and the terrain very rugged.  We were told that this part of the wall has actually been left untouched.  It was very broken down and actually quite unsafe in places.  Never the less it was amazing to see and be there.  The weather was perfect for a climb, a nice crisp fall day.  On the way down a few of us decided to take the zip line across the lake to the parking lot which was a much faster way to get down, but not as exciting as I had hoped. I am not sure what I was expecting but i was really hoping for a rollercoster rided feeling!!! no such luck.

Take care, sorry it took so long for the update.  Enjoy the pictures.  Till next time (I promise it won't be as long) be well.

Let me know what you think in the comment section I would love to know who is all taking a peak at my life in Beijing!!!!

not much new and no pictures

This past week has been a bit of a stressful one.  Thankfully I met my co-work and friend, Ronda for a relaxing evening at the Spa on Friday night.  The owner of the kindergarten had given us some gift certificates and to be honest it could not have come at a better time.  It was a much needed break from reality.  Then I spent the rest of the weekend with Ronda.  We had a leisure lunch at a Korean Restaurant on Saturday, some of the best food I have had in China so far.  Then I helped her with a halloween party she had planned for some of the kids she tutors.  Later that night she had invited some other friends over and we had a bit of a halloween party for the adults.  Much fun was had!!! I was only sad that I didn't have the forsight to bring a halloween costume with me to China.  Something to remember for next year!  Sunday morning we headed to church at the Beijing International Christian Fellowship, which I have been attending ( allbeit no very faithfully, hoping to change that !!!).  They had a guest speaker from England who seemed to be speaking directly to me and where I am in my life right now!!! It was a bit disconcerting but also much needed reminder of my purpose in life!!!  Then after church a few of us headed to a Muslin Chinese resturant for some lunch, more great food and good company.

Tonight I go to bed refreshed, looking forward to the next week.

Sorry no pictures this week.

Till next time, be well.

a trip to the mountains - shi an

I feel like it has been weeks since I updated my space but in reality it has only been a little over a week.  The week ended with no real highs or lows last week, the days went by pretty uneventful and I was looking forward to the weekend.  The kindergaten plans 4 trips a year for their staff, this past weekend was the fall trip, to the Shi an Mountains.

We left early Saturday morning and arrived at the mountains at about 11:30.  The weather that morning was quite cold and we were warned that in the mountains it is stll about 10 degrees colder.  When we arrived the temp. had risen throughout the morning and ended up in the mid 20's so it was very comfortable for a hike up the mountains.    First things first though, when we arrived we got settled into our rooms and then had lunch provided for us.  Then it was time for the big climb up the mountain.  There were cable cars to get us to the first landing area but we decided it was not worth the 30 yuan to take it.  So up the mountain we went.  It was actually not that bad of a climb once I got started and when i arrived at the first landing I took a few pictues of the view and of the hotel we stayed at.  Then we had to travel through the mountain, which was very dark except for 1 small lightbulb in the middle of the cavern. On the other side of the cavern we came to the path we followed through the mountain.  We were in-between the mountains, it was like being swallowed up by 2 huge walls of rock!!! yet it was also very calm and tranquil.   We walked and walked and walked and enjoyed the natural beauty, many flowing rivers and waterfalls.  Then we reached this dead end where you could go up into this cave and light a candle, I am not clear on the significance of this ritual and opted not to do it.  I did however buy a lock and attach it to this really long chain full of locks (alll you amazing race fans may remembered the episode where Rob, Amber and Hayden, Aaron got very frusterated trying to unlock a lock), for all you non amazing race fans check out my pictures and maybe you will get a picture of what I mean.  I got to leave a little piece of me on the Shi an Mountains. We kept walking and then made it to the bottom of some stairs, 2001 to be exact!!!! to climb or not to climb was the question??? and the answer !!!!! NOT -  yes we took the cable car!!! but we did walk down all those steps that was a feat in it's self!!! can I say wobbely legs.  and that was from just going down, I can say without a doubt that I would still be there if I had to climb all those stairs, definetly worth the 30 yuan this time.  The view from on top was beautiful many fall colours, which i have missed, in Beijing it is only yellow or brown.  There are many sumac trees in the mountains that turned bright red, adding a great splash of colour to the mountain range.  After a few photo we headed down the stairs.  Followed the path back to the meeting place and headed back to the hotel for a short rest, a barb-b-que (Chinese style), a bonfire and even a display of fireworks.  A nice ending to a beautiful day.

Sunday started early breakfast at 6:30 back in the bus to drive to a local mountain town to do a bit of street shopping, boating, horse back riding, or for the more adventurous types bungie jumping!!  We did some street shopping and horseback riding.  I really wanted to do this cable ride thing, not bungie jumping but sort of like it.  You are laying on you stomach and they strap you in and then let you ride the cable from the top of the mountain across the lake to the otherside, as you hang from the cable.  I thought it looked like a lot of fun, but with my recent back issues i thought it might not be the best idea.  I must talk to Dr. Darren about that so the next time I can allow my adventurous side win out not the practical side.

All in all a nice weekend.

Till next time, enjoy the pictures.

long week - with birthday fun on the weekend

What a week!!! Not one I would like to repeat anytime soon, now the weekend I would like to repeat anytime soon!!
I had to work from Saturday thru Friday which is not that big of a deal just a really long week.  It started out pretty unevenful, Saturday and Sunday and even Monday were great days at work.  The kids have been great and have started to really warm up and try to talk a bit more in English and are even trying to teach me some Chinese!!! I seem to butcher every word I try because the kids burst out in laughter when I try.
On Monday night it all started, I had the worst case of flu like symptoms I have ever had, I felt like crap!! So we decided I should make a trip to the hospital, yes the 2nd time since I arrived only 6 weeks ago.  So my roommates called our neighbor Jing to come with us, so she could translate. Once at the hospital I went to see the Dr.and as helpful as Jing was in translating there is something about not being able to tell the dr. in your own words what is wrong.  Very vulnerable.  Well he was deeply concerned with my pitting edema on my legs!! he didn't seem concerned about my flu symptoms or the fact that my pinkie and ring finger on my left hand were numb and had been for over a month.  The last dr. I saw was indifferent about that to!!  I on the other hand was very concerned about the numbness.  Anyway this dr. sent me to a bigger hospital with an English speaking dr.. So back in the cab we went.  We arrived at the hospital and my roommates filled out the appropriate forms, while I spoke to the dr. after I found a stretcher to lay down on!!! Well a urine test and 2 blood work tests later showed I had some sort of infection, most likely some food poisoning, so she ordered an I.V. drip and a bag of vit. C.  and 4 hours later I was able to go back to my apartment, with dr.'s orders to see a specialist about my legs.  Again no mention of my finger numbness!  How frusterating.  By Tuesday afternoon I felt a bit better and managed to eat some supper.  What a mistake that was I had a bit of a relaps and felt crappy once again.  This time I managed to fall asleep and woke up Wednesday morning feeling a bit better.  Off to work I went, I was still a bit chilled and had a bit of nausea but felt I could manage at least the morning. When talking to Jasmine, the supervisor of the Kindergarten, she could really tell I was quite concerned about my finger numbness and that I couldn't get through to the dr.'s that I wanted to know why they are numb!  About an hour later Jasmine came in to the office and introduced me to Dr. Darren Wang, one of the students dads, I was greatful for the concern but thought another dr. to try to get my symptoms across through a translator, then he starts talking and asking me all sorts of questions in English. I was so happy to have someone I could talk to about my symptoms. He did a bunch of tests in the office and then told me he thought it in my best interest to get an MRI done.  The numbness is caused by some problem in my spine, around the 8th vertabrae, it could be a number of things but he wanted the MRI to pin point the problem and go from there. Needless to say I was a bit freaked out.  He gave me his card and said to call the office, at the International SOS clinic, and make an appointment to see him, and he would schedule the appropriate tests, he also wanted to do an ultrasound of my legs to rule out any blood clots, he felt it was unlikely but just to be safe he thought it would be a good idea. On Thursday I went to see him, he did a few more tests and set up the appointments for that day.  The ultrasound came back fine, it most likely has more to do with a lack of protien in my diet and standing up all day, hiking the Great Wall didn't help it either!! The MRI test was the next thing to go and do.  The clinic doesn't have big equipment like an MRI machine but they have contracts with many of the local hospitals to use their equipment, so I went with another Dr. and a driver to a different hospital to get the test done.  Yep now I have been in 4 different hospitals in Beijing!!! Hopefully I won't see any more!!  On the way to the hospital Dr. David Wang (not Darren) walked me through the test they would be doing. I had a general idea of what to expect but his explanation of the test was very much appreciated.  Not a fun test at all, for those of you who don't know what it is, it is a big magnetic tube they place you in and then leave the room and close the door behind them and then start sending loud noises into the tube.  Oh did I mention you are only inches from the top of the tube.  One test I would rather not do again.  The car ride back to the clinic was not fun either, because Dr. David had the results but I had to wait for Dr. Darren to talk to me about the results.  Then when we arrived back Dr. David asked me to wait in the waiting area while he briefed Dr. Darren, all the waiting totally sucked.  Back in the office with Dr. Darren he showed me the film of my spine and the problem areas, it appears I have two herniated disks in my upper spine.  Between the 6th and the 8th vertabraes.  Not great news but I suppose it could have been much worse.  He has given me some suggestion to alleviate the problem, mainly just some common sence stuff, like sitting straight wihen typing at the computer and lying on my back to sleep, and well resting for 2 weeks would be really good!! So I have been trying to lay down as much as possible throughout the day, but it is kind of hard doing circle time with the kids while lying on my back!!!!!  By Friday all my nausea and flu like symptoms were gone.  Just in time for my Birthday.
My birthday began with my Mom, sister Kerri and her 2 kids Kyle and Rachel singing happy birthday to me through the web cam.  What a great way to start the day!! Then it was feild trip Friiday we were off to  a peanut farm with the kids to picked peanuts.  The kids had a blast and I really enjoyed listening to the laughter and chatter amongst the kids while they busily picked the peanuts.  It was a beautiful sunny day, with a cool breeze. A perfect day for picking peanuts I must say!! The kids also enjoyed singing happy birthday to me in both English and Chinese, it was too cute!
Friday night I was invited to go out with Jing and her boyfriend Tom and some of his Austrailan mates, who are travelling for the year and were in Beijing for a few days.  It was alot of fun to get dressed up and head out on the town and enjoy nice evening with other forigners.  I enjoyed the evening and decided to stay with Jing at Tom's because the commute back to my end of town is so long and then we could enjoy a nice brunch before I headed home the next day. As birthdays go it was way up there, not quite as fun as our hat party after party a few years ago!!(remember Heather, Deb and Mandy) but pretty close.  Then on Saturday I arrived home to find that my roommates had planned a surprise party for me.  What great roommates. Thanks Ladies.  They had decorated, got me a cake, invited many of the teachers and then planned to go out dancing later in the evening.  It was another great time and luck would have it we met back up with the Austrailian guys who had decided to stay one more night. What a great night of fun, friends and good times.  I am so thankful for all the great friends I have met so far in Beijing, who would have thought a year ago I would be sitting at my computer writting about my adventure in China, it still amazes me how life can change so quickly, especially if  you are open to it. What an awesome life I have today!!
I hope all of you who read this are well and Hello to all those First CRC members who have checked out my web page, my mom mentioned that somehow it got published in the bulliten at Church so I hope you all enjoy reading about my adventure and I look forward to hearing all your comments. It has been alot of fun to do and is a great way to stay in touch with family and friends. Take care, until the next time enjoy the pictures.

The highlight of my week off was my trip to the Great Wall!!  Then on Monday we went shopping and on Tuesday we went shopping and on Wednesday we went shopping!!!!  Yes I know a bit out of control!!   Mostly I did window shopping but did manage to buy a cell phone,  in the electronics district and a really nice ring, earrings, and pendant set at Pearl Market but other than that I just went along for the ride.  Tom (one of the teachers in my room) and his girlfriend Joy, came shopping with us on Monday and Tuesday.  What a trooper Tom was!!! He did it without complaining at all! (well at least to us) On our way home Wednesday night we stopped in Tian'anmen Square.  They had lit it up for the National Day Holiday.  They also had a display up for the Olympics to be held in Beijing in 2008, done all in lights.  It was beautiful but the crowds were insane.  It is the worst time to be in Tian'anmen Square because many people from all over China come to view Mao's "resting" place. We just went to see the lights!!

Then on Thursday we headed to the China Acrobatic Circus that was in town.  It was fair! The acrobatic part of it was really cool and nerve racking!!! I always think they are going to fall, and most of the time they had no form of saftey net or mats under them!!! The clowns were    dissapointing to say the least and the animal acts just seemed mean, the dogs and lions and tigers, and bears seemed miss treated!! I didn't really like watching this!! The horses on the other hand were pretty cool, all the riders hopping on and off them and standing on their backs.  Over all I was glad the tickets were free, the kindergarten had some sort of connection so they got them for us!!! I still hope to see another Acrobatic show here in Beijing, all my tourist books say it is something not to miss, I suspect they were not talking about the traveling accrobatic circus.  Oh well it was a rainy day    so it was a good activity to do under the tent.

Friday was spent just hanging out in around the apartment, I caught up on some laundry and tidied up my room, did a bit of school work, and went for a few groceries. I found a coffee mix today at the grocery store so  I enjoyed a nice cup of vanilla coffe, the first desent cup of coffee so far, and it was just a maxwell house mix!! A very relaxing day!! A nice end to a great week off.

Back to work on Saturday!!! Yep, they do things differently here.  The National day holiday was actually only a 3 day break but they give us 5 days (they actually call it a 7 day hoilday - with the weekend before added into the equation!!!) So for some reason we have to make up the 2 un-holiday days.  So now I have to work 7 days in a row!!! I think I would have rather worked Thursday and Friday and had the weekend off, oh well like I said they do things differently here!!  The whole country does it this way so I guess when in China do as the Chinese!

Oh I forgot to mention that I also spent alot of time chatting on MSN  with Mom!!! she is getting very proficient at it and it is a bit addictive!!!! We even had the web cam and mic on!  Welcome to the age of technology!!! I too feel like I just entered in as well!!!

Just so you all know Friday is October 14th!!     Can you guess what that means?  I am sure a lite   just went on.

Enjoy the latest pictures of my week off.   Till next time be well.

The Great Wall of China - the jin shan ling pass

Well it has been another week here in China and what a week.  Last Saturday I had been given free tickets to the woman's semi-finals of the China Open Tennis.  I had never been to a live match before and I totally enjoyed it.  It was a beautiful day warm and sunny with a cool enough breeze, perfect for watching a tennis match.  The woman's singles was a good match to watch, it was close and very exciting.  Believe it or not I have no clue who played or won, the names where in Chinese and even though the announcer was speaking English the names seemed so similar that I couldn't tell them apart, so I have no idea who actually won, but it was still fun to be a part of it.  The other match I stayed for was the woman's double semi-final, this on the other hand was not a good match at all!! The Chinese girls got creamed by the Spanish team, it was a super quick match and the Chinese crowded was very disappointed in their stars!!  They did not perform under the pressure of the home crowd.  I enjoyed listening to the Chinese bantering in the crowds while the Chinese team kept trying win a set.  It was a nice day although I should have been home doing some work.  The rest of the week was super busy!! I had to finish putting together my workshop that I had to present on Tuesday to the Chinese English Teachers (CET's).  It went well, not long enough, as I had allowed sometime for questions, which they had none of so next time I will have more prepared.  I also had to have my English Teaching Reports done by the end of the week, on each child.  Then they told me it was parent open day on Friday.  This meant that the parents whould come in and observe the class all morning.  That went well also and I have been so well recived by the parents, they are all so friendly and happy I am here!  I hope I can live up to their expectations!!

With the week done and over we headed across town to meet the bus to go to the Great Wall of China!!  What an adventure this was!!! I had been looking so forward to it all week I hoped I wouldn't be disappointed!  Well I was not at all disappointed, it was a fantastic time! Just an amazing site to see, forsure one of the wonders of the world. We boarded the buses at 5:00 and wondered what was the hold up when we had not left yet at 5:50.  Well the sleeping bags and foam mats that were rented for us had not arrived yet!! surprise surprise, and when they did they stood beside the bus and threw them in the windows!  We finally got on the road at 6:20 and started our 2hr. ride to the Great Wall, well 2hrs my foot 4 and a half hours later we arrived at our location.  We then started our treck up to where we would sleep. (oh did I mention the organizer guy said it would be a 20 min. walk to our sleeping location!!!)  Well can I say this was probably one of the hardest things I have done.  We walked for 2hrs. straight uphill,in the dark, on a wall that had been built many years ago, you can imagine what shape some of the steps are in!! what an adventure.  At first I wondered what the heck I had gotten myself into, but after I got into a good pace it went ok.  Needless to say I slept extremly well on the Great Wall.  The view in the morning was so worth the hard hike up.  It was absolutly amazing.  I still can't believe that I have climbed the Great Wall of China, who would have thought 3 months ago that I would be in China, let alone sleeping on the Great Wall.  Well another week has passed and I can still say I enjoy Beijing.  My next goal is to figure out the transit system and see if I can get around a bit more freely.  They keep saying it is an easy city to understand, but I haven't figured it out yet.  Tomorrow I will get a better map of the whole city, on my week off I will be trying to figure it out, wish me luck.  Till next time enjoy all the pictures.

My First Month in Beijing

Welcome to my web page!!!!  Another new adventure for me.

I am going to try and update it on a weekly basis, with new pictures and info. on  what is happening in my life.  I hope you will enjoy looking me up and keeping up with what's going on here in Beijing.

Many of you have received my emails so I won't bore you with retelling it.  Life here has been an adventure, something new everyday.  Some good, like going to the markets and to the local tourist attractions, if only to see some other westerners!!  Some not so good,  like getting lost in a taxi cab  and driving around for 40 min. just looking for landmarks, which seem to change daily!! and getting sick and going to the hospital and not being able to fully communicate with the Dr.  even with the English speaking Chinese teacher Mandy bless her heart!!  It was a very valnerable experience.  Some really good, like meeting Todd and Jing who live right across the driveway and speak great English, and  scoring free tickets to the China Tennis Open.

There have been days of homesickness and days of just missing the easiness of life back home, knowing where to shop, where to go for a nice walk, what channel to watch,  just being able to communicate.  Here everything is so much harder!!  But I am learning more everyday, not the language mind you!! it is crazy hard, 4 different tones, and half the time I can't hear the difference, Jing has offered to teach me but we'll see. Maybe LATER, a favouite Chinese phrase   later later!!!  We hear it often when something needs to get done, like when our hydro shut off at 10:00 at night and they said maybe later!!! Yeh   no! right now we said, so they spliced into someone elses till the next day when we found out where we had to buy a new hydro card!!!  Only in China.. I have learned alot about living in a new culture, culture shock hits me at least once a day when I see something I would never see in Canada, like the kids who just pull down their pants where ever and pee in the grass, makes me thankful for closed toe shoes!!!!

Life has been one big adventure here and I am happy to say that I have had many more great days than not so great!!! I am thankful that.  Till next time enjoy the picture file too.
